2020 Hike #45 on September 30th at J.I. Case Wetlands Area within Hawthorn Park in Vigo County Indiana

52 Hike Challenge

General Info

Hawthorn Park is a park managed by Vigo County in Indiana. It is located at 6067 E Old Maple Ave in Terre Haute Indiana.

The J.I. Case Wetland Area is within Hawthorn Park, on the east side. There is a wildlife observation shelter along the trail that runs through Hawthorn Park, which overlooks the J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge.

The levee for J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge was constructed in 1984. The lake was filled during early 1985 and a boat launch added. The primary purpose for the lake is waterfowl management with fishing designated as a secondary use. The 50.3 acre lake attracts migratory birds in the fall and provides excellent fishing opportunities, especially in the spring. The lake is stocked with bluegill, redear sunfish, large-mouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, yellow bullheads, and warmouth. For a map of the park, click here.

My visit

Tracy joined me on Hike #45 of 2020. This is my second visit to the J.I. Case Wetlands this year. Dexter joined me earlier in the year on my first hike here. This park is really beautiful in the fall, especially the wetlands portion of the park. All of the Vigo County Parks are beautiful in the fall.

The Wetlands Trail takes you around a "lake". I'm not sure it's deep enough to be considered an actual lake. There are pine trees out in the middle of the water which turn a bright orange this time of year before the needles fall off.

This wetland area is full of different birds. I captured 3 different species of birds during this hike. There are also plenty of turtles around. The wildflowers on this hike are loaded with bees and butterflies. Of course, I captured these as well! Scroll down to see my pics!
