2020 Hike #7 on March 15th at J.I. Case Wetlands Area within Hawthorn Park in Vigo County Indiana

52 Hike Challenge

General Info

Hawthorn Park is a park managed by Vigo County in Indiana. It is located at 6067 E Old Maple Ave in Terre Haute Indiana.

The J.I. Case Wetland Area is within Hawthorn Park, on the east side. There is a wildlife observation shelter along the trail that runs through Hawthorn Park, which overlooks the J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge.

The levee for J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge was constructed in 1984. The lake was filled during early 1985 and a boat launch added. The primary purpose for the lake is waterfowl management with fishing designated as a secondary use. The 50.3 acre lake attracts migratory birds in the fall and provides excellent fishing opportunities, especially in the spring. The lake is stocked with bluegill, redear sunfish, large-mouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, yellow bullheads, and warmouth. For a map of the park, click here.

My visit

The J.I. Case Wetland Area has a seperate parking lot which is just off of Old Maple Avenue to the east of the park's main entrance. Dexter and I parked in this lot during our visit. The Wetland Area Lake is just a few feet from the parking lot. The trail wraps around the lake. As you get around to the west side of the lake, you will be entering Hawthorn Park. In order to get back to your vehicle (if you park in the Wetland lot) you will need to take the trail on the right. This trail should lead you past the observation shelter. As you continue on the trail, you will come to a few Y's, but as long as you continue taking the trail on the right, you will eventually make it back to your vehicle. There are almost always Canadian Geese swimming around in the Wetland Lake. There were also some Beavers out and about during our visit as well. You can see evidence of the Beavers if you pay attention as you are walking along! We have walked this trail several times in the past. The Lake is absolutely beautiful in the fall.
