2021 Roadtrip to Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee Florida on March 11th

My visit

The drive to Tallahassee was only about 30 minutes from our AirBNB home, so I decided to add another Florida State Park to my photo collection. March is really the best time of the year to visit the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. The spring blossoms were gorgeous! Speaking from a photographer point-of-view, I wish we could have had a somewhat overcast day because the full sun made for some ugly photos, but when you are this far from home, you have to roll with it! Scroll down to see the pics!

General Info

(from https://www.floridastateparks.org/maclaygardens)

A masterpiece of floral architecture, the gardens feature a picturesque brick walkway, secret garden, reflection pool, walled garden, and hundreds of camellias and azaleas. The beautiful ornamental gardens were first planted in 1923 by Alfred B. and Louise Maclay after they purchased the property for their winter home. Peak blooming season is from January 1 through April 30, with the floral peak in mid-to-late March.

Alfred Maclay was a wealthy banker and financier from New York. He visited Tallahassee with his wife, Louise Fleischmann Maclay, in 1923 and was impressed by the huge oaks and pines, beautiful dogwoods and hollies. He decided this would be the place to fulfill his lifelong dream of creating a beautiful garden, and this would be their winter home. Over the years they established one of the most beautiful ornamental gardens in Florida.

Today, the gardens are a masterpiece of floral architecture, featuring a picturesque brick pathway, a secret garden, a reflection pool, a walled garden, and hundreds of camellias and azaleas. In 1953, nine years after Mr. Maclay’s death, Mrs. Maclay and her children donated the gardens to the state of Florida. She expressed her wishes that the gardens always be maintained as a memorial to her husband and his creation, and opened to the public for the enjoyment of the people of Florida and guests.
