Bridges & Mills of Indiana Collection

Of more than 600 covered historic bridges known to have been built in Indiana, 90 are still standing. Some of these still carry traffic while others are bypassed, and a few have been moved to parks or memorials; five of our historic covered bridges are located on private property.
In the early 1800's all of the mills in Indiana were powered with water and wooden waterwheels were used to turn the buhrstones. Although each mill used water to power their mills, the individual design for each mill had to reflect the position of the waterwheel relative to the stones.
Indiana also has a very large number of historic bridges and one of the best preservation track records in the country, particularly with metal truss bridges and concrete arch bridges. Many preservation projects are high quality in-kind restoration of historic metal truss bridges, and careful reconstruction of deteriorated concrete arch bridges.
We will be travelling around Indiana photographing all of the historic bridges! Check back often to see our progress! #wanderingnursewhitlock
